Technology all the way
Emmanuel Schmitt
After completing a Master of Science degree specializing in information technology at the prestigious Ecole Central de Lyon in France, Emmanuel Schmitt joined Accenture as a technology analyst and was invited onto the team working for the French Revenue Agency (Direction Générale des Impôts). The project was an important one: helping the agency journey toward high performance by offering better service to citizens.

Accenture had already helped develop a large-scale platform for the online submission of tax returns, but now the revenue agency was determined to increase the volume of tax returns it could process—50,000 per hour in peak periods.

Accenture used a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach to develop a platform secure and flexible enough to meet this ambitious target.

Emmanuel was appointed leader of a development team that ranged from five to seven people throughout the project. One thing the team focused on was developing component hosting services for digital certificate delivery, digital signatures, verification and secure archiving of all tax-payer information. Another responsibility was improving the application architecture for the solution—key issues here were the need for high quality and robustness, as well as the French government’s commitment to using open source products. “We had to create solutions that met our client’s requirement for very short-cycle development of the highest quality,” says Emmanuel. “Also, of course, the architecture had to be able to process tax returns in great volumes.”

Technical architecture is an enduring passion for Emmanuel—but managing a team was a new experience. “In Accenture, experienced managers are free with their advice and help, and that proved to be decisive in helping me to discharge my new responsibilities,” he observes. Since the project ended six months ago, he has continued to operate as a developer team lead, this time with a bigger team and enhanced responsibilities—and for one of Accenture’s premier clients in France.

Emmanuel is determined that his career will always revolve around technology—but as his projects grow more technically demanding, so must his ability to help his team members deliver their best. “Working at Accenture means you come into contact with the best people—and they will help you to gain new skills and grow,” he says. “You really have to be ready to learn and change—Accenture gives you the wonderful opportunity to stretch yourself.”
