When it comes to outsourcing, Accenture is tops. That’s the consensus of the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP), which this year named Accenture to the number-one spot on the Global Outsourcing 100, its annual ranking of the world’s top outsourcing service providers. In placing first, Accenture unseated two-time champion IBM, which had held the top spot since the list launched three years ago.

The Global Outsourcing 100, which includes both Leaders (companies with $60 million or more in annual sales) and Rising Stars, employs a ranking system that mimics the qualifying process companies use to select vendors. To make the list, companies are rated according to 18 criteria, with final rankings determined by a weighted average of judges’ scores on size and growth rate, customer references, documented competencies and management capabilities.
Besides placing number one in Leaders, Accenture came in first in company size, industry recognition, customer references and executive strength. It also rated above average in employee management and outsourcing experience.
Kevin Campbell, Accenture’s group chief executive-Outsourcing, praised his team for the win. “This achievement proves that Accenture is staying true to its promise of high performance delivered, every day.” he said.

Leading the leaders
Accenture emerged a leader in a variety of sub-categories as well, ranking in the top 10 companies based on overall revenue, the best 10 leaders with employee presence in India and the top 10 companies by industry focus for both health care and human resources management. Additionally, it placed in the top 20 by industry focus for financial services (insurance), retail and consumer goods, financial management and information and communications technology management.
The list is truly global, with companies in 19 countries vying for spots in the top 100 this year. “There was tremendous growth in the 2008 program,” said Pam O’Dell, leader of IAOP’s Global Outsourcing 100 program, who called the competition “keen.”
“Accenture won on customer testimonials—the strongest evidence you can have,” said Campbell, noting that IAOP had singled out customer references as Accenture’s key strength. “From Thomas Cook to BT to Best Buy, our clients know that outsourcing by Accenture doesn’t just reduce costs, but can also improve their performance.”
